My Daughter got into the Upward Bound Program at the University

She is so excited! And I am excited for her. This will be a wonderful opportunity for her.

The Upward Bound Program is a college preparation program for high school students. They have summer classes, tutoring services, and provide help with financial aid forms, college entrance exams and applications. They also provide fee waivers for these things.

The students stay on campus in the dorms Sunday night to Friday afternoon for six weeks, and they have a roommate from a different area.

We live in a school district that does not cooperate with the program. Generally this means that the student cannot join the program. I got my brother (a student at the university) involved in getting her in. I told him that, as a homeschool parent, I have the right to send my child anywhere I want for classes, etc. He found a (maine/federal) law coinciding with this fact, and they agreed that she could apply.

Another hurdle was the standardized test she had never had. He brought her to take the test that they give to Onward students, and she did so well. Math was her lowest (not surprising). Her scores were:

Arithmatic: 47.9

Sentence Skills: 92.9%

Reading Comprehension: 96.1

All very good scores. The Arithmatic has a lot of algebra, which she is not good at, so that was a really good score for her. She did better than almost half of the high school students who enter that college program, and she just turned 16. That made her very happy.

The best part is that she will get free tutoring in Algebra!

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Have a nice day!

Shannon
